The week of October 10th – October 14th is ‘Friendship Week’ at Beech Hill College.

‘Friendship Week’ is held as part of the “Cool School Programme” at Beech Hill College.

Information Evening for Parents
As part of ‘Friendship Week’ an information evening was held for parents on Tuesday 11th. The title of the talk was  “Understanding your Children’s use of Social Networking”. Topics covered were:

  • The benefits and dangers of the Internet for children
  • E-Safety, netiquette and cyber-bullying
  • Monitoring/controlling children’s Internet activity

Those who attended found the presentation given by Ms Leona McEnroe very informative and it is hoped to make highlights of it available for parents.

Art Competition

One of the ways in which we involve as many students as possible in exploring various aspects of friendship week and anti-bullying awareness is an art competition.

Below is a selection of pictures created by our students for our Friendhip Week Art Competition in 2010.

Literary Competitions

Literary Competitions are held in English, Irish and French. Poetry/creative writing entries are considered in Junior and Senior categories.

Teachers assign this as homework to all students and submit their choices for prize giving. This has proved popular with students in previous  years and helps students to engage with the theme of anti-bullying.

Other Subjects

Teachers in other subject areas become involved in activities assoted with ‘Friendship Week’. There are obvious links in History with discussions on the history of political struggles, apartheid, figures such as Martin Luther King and Ghandi. A practical application in Geography would be to draw a ma of areas in the school/locality where bullying is most likely to happen. In CSPE the focus could be on the theme of Human Dignity and in Practical Subjects teacherss can focus on the importance of cooperation and teamwork in order to achieve goals.
