For the 11th year running Beech Hill College is involved in the KEY (Knowledge through Enterprise for Youth) Programme again this year.

Twelve students from Beech Hill College travelled with their Teacher Mr. McHugh to Lorne House in Belfast recently for the 1st of four residentials.

The KEY Programme is a cross-border, cross-community project which involves linking up with two other schools in Northern Ireland. The students spend a total of 15 days in Northern Ireland. The programme is funded by the International Fund for Ireland through Young Enterprise Northern Ireland and Junior Achievement Ireland. This year Beech Hill College is linked with a school from Portaferry and a school from Newry.

The programme has a business theme, where students have to set up a mini-company, design a product, market it and hopefully make a profit. They also take part in outdoor activities such as Caving, Jungle Gym, Canoeing and Kayaking at Belfast Activities Centre.

Students also prepare Curriculum Vitae and members of the business community in Belfast come in and conduct Mock Interviews with the students.

The students then attend a final graduation day at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast.

Science Week 2011 was celebrated with great interest amongst the students at Beech Hill College. The highlight of the week was the quiz which took place on Wednesday in the library, and there was great competition and rivalry between the junior students. The top three winning teams received vouchers for a local shop as their winnings. Students had the opportunity to participate in a quiz, poster competitions, science trip, and creative writing workshops. Students were also offered practical and fun science classes as part of the science curriculum for that week. A great week was had by all.

Science through Music
Transition Year students from Beech Hill College attended a Science Show called “Amoeba to Zebra” in Dundalk IT as part of Science Week 2011.
This was a Natural History Musical Epic designed to educate and entertain in equal measures and performed by Yorkshire-based pop group BEING 747. The show charts the development of all living things from the origins of the most basic single-cell organisms right through to the sophistication of mankind.
The band, who wrote all their own material, had the idea of teaching science in new and interesting ways. Their belief is that learning from looking at a page is not the only way to learn. Was it a success? Yes it was. One of the students who attended recalled every song and said “It was way better than sitting in class”. Teachers who attended were fascinated.
Information on “Amoeba to Zebra” and on BEING 747 can be found on the Internet at http://www.amoebatozebra.co.uk/

Undefeated Beech Hill College U-19 Girls Basketball team gained another victory recently, when they beat neighbouring Coláiste Oiriall. The score remained close during the first two quarters but great baskets from Casey Treanor and Louise Connolly left the team winning by nine points overall. The defence had to remain strong, as Coláiste Oiriall’s Ellen O’Brien was able to weave her way in and shoot great scores.
Unfortunately Beech Hill College U-16 team were not quite as lucky on this occasion and, although defeated, an excellent performance from the entire team, especially Brionán McAleer and Casey Treanor, meant that they were no push-over.
Both Beech Hill College teams then travelled to Longford on Monday 21st and played two strong Granard teams. Each team displayed superb tem effort resulting in wins for both – the U-16s by two points and the U-19s by three points in what were very tightly-fought games. Both teams now progress to the Semi-finals, where we wish them luck.
U-16 Team: Casey Treanor, Brionán McAleer, Christina McMahon, Mary Murphy, Shauna Hetherington, Gráinne Keenan, Sarah Smyth, Megan Boylan, Emma McCrudden, Shannon McCarey.
U-19 Team: Louise Connolly, Brionán McAleer, Casey Treanor, Michaela Treanor, Amie McQuillan, Roisín Conaty, Tabea Arndt, Shauna Cronin, Lisa Murphy, Fiona McKenna, Danielle Murphy, Dearbhla Sleator, Caoimhe Cassidy, Meaghan McHugh, Michaella Leonard.

Five Students from Beech Hill College Monaghan attended the Connnacht/Ulster Regional conference of the European Youth Parliament. This is the first time that the Conference was held in Monaghan.

A very busy week end was enjoyed by all who attended. There were team building exercises together with very lively debates on such diverse topics as the Euro problem, The Olso massacre and the summer violence in the UK, unemployment in the European Union, Energy waste to food production.

It proved to be a wonderful forum to create political and environmental awareness and to build confidence and self esteem. Well done to all who took part .

Below are the five students from Beech Hill College who took part.
